My condolences to the family. I worked with Mr. Loring for a short amount of time--he was a great story teller and pleasure to work with.

When I first got to LORING I noticed copies of Strunk and White's touchstone of English grammar, “The Elements of Style”(EOS) on many engineers' desks.  I learned that Mr. Loring had bought copies for the entire office because, he said, since the firm's product was ideas, those ideas should be communicated as well and as clearly as possible.  

Later, when editing his documents, I had occasion (and the temerity) to regularly correct his use of the word “comprise”.  Eventually, I copied the relevant page from Strunk and White and stapled it to a  corrected letter.  He laughed when I returned it to him, amused, I think, by the poetry and irony of being undone by his own promotion of good language skills.

EOS seems an appropriate paradigm, espousing principals that seemed to govern Mr. Loring's life:  succinctness, excellence, elegance without pretense.

Joe was a very special guy! We knew him from college days in the forties and have many fond memories of those times.  So proud to have known him with so many fine accomplishments!

Joe was great man, a man of conviction and loved his work. He cared very much for his employees at JRLA and always wanted to see them grow professionally. On many occasions when we met, Joe talked about his engineering work in projects like the World Trade Center, the Parliament Building in Canberra, Australia and others. He was very proud of the work he and his colleagues did for these iconic buildings around the world.

Mr. Loring was a great and loving person, it was a pleasure being his secretary for 12 years he will truly be missed.  Renesha

Dear Nonnie, Debbie, Lisa, Sheila, and the rest of the Loring family-
I was deeply saddened to learn of Joe's passing. Our families spent February break together at Dorado Beach in Puerto Rico every year to play tennis, and then the men spent their afternoons on the links often losing many a ball to the beautiful ocean and water traps. Joe was a brilliant man who will leave behind a huge footprint on this earth. It was a privilege to be in Joe's company. His huge smile, tremendous visions, and love of family will live on and on in his children and grandchildren. May his memory serve as a blessing to each and every one of you who were part of  Joe's life.

Joe was unspeakably gracious, genuine, and engaging. He greeted everyone like they were his best friend, and he possessed the rare gift of exceptional magnanimity and generosity. It was such an enduring pleasure to shake his hand and be greeted by him with the warmest hello and smile possible. Joe - you were a wonderful blessing to Susan and me.
