

Joe is survived by his wife, Jeanne and their daughter, Julia. He is also survived by his brothers Bill (Kathy) of North Carolina, Stephen (Robin) of Maryland, Michael (Suzette) of Maryland, Mark (Carol) of New York and his sister Kathy (Todd) of Maine.
Joe was blessed with twelve nieces and nephews that he thought the world of and greatly admired.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, William Mathis, and his mother, Marie Quinn. Joe was also loved by his stepfather, James Hamill and his mother-in-law, Dorothy Schwartz.
Joe was born in New York City on April 23, 1960. He was raised and educated in Shrub Oak, New York. He entered the USAF in 1978 and proudly served his country for 24 years in numerous places around the world, finally retiring from his career at the Pentagon.
Joe earned his master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
In 2005, Joe married Jeanne Schwartz and in 2008 they welcomed their daughter, Julia. The family resided in Arlington, Virginia.
Joe had a second career as a Federal employee of the USCG under DHS using his CISSP for cybersecurity.
Joe was an avid fan of the NY Giants, NY Rangers and the San Antonio Spurs. He enjoyed golf, running, biking and being out in nature. Joe was an avid traveler throughout his life. His greatest passion was fatherhood. He shared his love of reading, sports and Star Trek with Julia. Not to mention his love of Carvel ice cream.
Sadly, Joe was diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia. He had a very positive outlook and was known to say he would be the first person cured. He attended programs at Insight in Fairfax County, the Arlington Adult Day Center and his last two years under the compassionate care of Avalon House in McLean, Virginia with assistance from Goodwin Hospice.
Family and friends will gather on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 4PM to 7PM at Murphy’s Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, Virginia 22203.
A Catholic funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at 11AM followed by a luncheon in the parish hall at Saint Ann’s Church, 5300 10th Street N, Arlington, Virginia 22205.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.
