Kathleen Weatherford Gorman

Kathleen Weatherford Gorman, a long time resident of Arlington, Va, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 17, 2015 after battling Alzheimer's disease. She was 85 years old. She is survived by 4 children - Kaleen W Gorman, Jennifer G Hickman, L Dwight Gorman and Aileen D Kistler - and 9 Grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, S John Gorman and her parents Helena D Weatherford of Kenmare, Ireland and William Dwight Weatherford of Abaco, Bahamas. Born March 13, 1930 in New York, NY, she spent her early childhood living in Nassau, Bahamas. Just prior to World War II, Kathleen and her parents traveled back to Ireland for a visit and were unable to return home due to the outbreak of war. They remained in Ireland where she was educated and enjoyed her most memorable experiences attending the international girls boarding school at Kylemore Abbey for her secondary education. Upon graduation, she returned to Nassau where she began her career in civil aviation. She later decided to continue that career in the US at the Civil Aeronautics Board and her education at George Washington University where she received an undergraduate degree from the School of Government in Foreign Affairs. Shortly after marrying John Gorman, they moved to Boston where they both graduated with Masters Degrees - John at MIT and Kathleen from the School of Government in International Relations at Boston University. Later they returned to Washington, DC where she continued her career as an Economist focusing on International Aviation Policy and Economics, working at the Federal Aviation Administration. Kathleen retired after almost 30 years of government service promoting US positions at International Aviation Meetings and serving as a US Advisor to the International Civil Aviation Organization, a UN specialized agency - a great achievement for a woman in her time. The family will be holding a small graveside service on Friday November 20th and requests in lieu of sending flowers that donations be made to Alzheimer's Association.
