
Born October 19th, 1940, in Washington D.C. to the late James Lawrence Farmer and Virginia Storm Farmer, Louise grew up the first of three children in Norman, Oklahoma. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Letters and earned Master’s degrees from Yale University and Goddard College. She worked as a high school and college English teacher, interned as a family therapist,and served on a U.S. Congressman's Washington staff. More importantly, Louise was a prolific writer of short stories and novels. Her writing appeared in numerous anthologiesm and journals, including Glimmer Train, the Virginia Quarterly Review, and Bellevue Literary Review. Her work often chronicled the lives of women on a path of self discovery. 2012 saw the publication of her novel, One Hundred Years of Marriage.
Louise is survived by her husband of 60 years, Larry K Smith; her children, Virginia Louise Smith of Los Angeles, California, and Tim K. Smith of Brooklyn, New York; her sister Pheobe Mallard and brother Larry Farmer; two grandchildren, Ray Coco Smith and Clementine Huston.
A memorial will be held at the Jefferson Retirement community in Arlington, VA, on August 4th at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Planned Parenthood.
Louise will be remembered for her grace, style, and kindness and how she could light up a room and move across the dance floor.
