
Miss Margaret Hackett Gibson, aged 104 died at her residence in Goodwin House, Alexandria on Friday, July 26, 2013. Miss Gibson, a native Washingtonian, who lived for many years in Arlington County, Virginia was a graduate of the old Wilson Normal School in the District and of the University of Maryland, College Park.
A teacher for forty years in the D.C. School system, she taught at the old Dent School on Capital Hill and then taught as head teacher for approximately twenty years at the Ketcham School in Anacosta and the Horace Mann School. For the remainder of her career Miss Gibson was the head teacher at the Rose Lees Hardy Elementary School until her retirement in 1968.
Miss Gibson was an early member of the Arlington Historical Society where she served as secretary and president. She was a member of the Phi Delta Gamma Honorary Society, Delta Kappa Gamma and the National Society for the Daughters of the American Revolution. Miss Gibson was also an active member (serving as vice president) of the Friends of the Alexandria Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped support group.
Miss Gibson’s interests included history and genealogy. Because of her family background, she was especially proud of the fact that she was a direct descendant of Caleb Carr who was the first royal governor of Rhode Island. Her grandfather and great grandfather served in the Civil War. She displayed their swords proudly wherever she lived. Her “adopted niece”, Connie Ann Lacy-Rock and her husband Patrick Rock survive Miss Gibson.
A Memorial Service is planned at Goodwin House Alexandria on August 24, 2013 at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Boy’s Home, Covington, Virginia 24426
