Born in Mola di Bari, Italy in 1938 and arriving in NYC when he was 8 years old, Mario lived a full, rich, happy life, marrying Mimi Burgess and surviving her death in 1995. He died in peace on Friday, August 2, 2013. He leaves his long-time companion, Sandi Wilson; three surviving brothers—Bart, John and Tony Verga; three sisters-in law—Rose Marie, Claudia and Janice; 13 nieces and nephews—Laura, Stephen, Matthew, Andrew, Robert, Michael, Anthony, Valerie, Janine, Vito, Kathy, Marissa and Franco; aunts, uncles, and dozens of cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many wonderful friends and loved ones. Mario served his country with great pride in ROTC and Pershing Rifles in the United States Army, and he was a mechanical engineer. He had a killer tennis serve and was always working on his golf game. His kindness and generosity toward everyone will always be remembered. Mario lived La Dolce Vita.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society or DAV.
A memorial service at Arlington National Cemetery for all family and friends is planned for sometime in the fall.
It is with great sadness that Tony and I come to grips with the unexpected loss of Brother Mario. He was a special and unique person, kind, gentle, generous, suave, and good fun. He always stayed engaged with his family even though most family members lived a distance in New York. He made sure to attend all special family affairs. His visits to New York, where he frequently stayed at our home, were always a cause for celebration, fun, and parties. Something special always happened when he came. We will miss these wonderful times, his good conversation, and his presence amongst the family clan. We know he is at peace in Heaven with Mimi and the other Verga family members.
