She was born in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Philip Raymond and Rose DeFranco, and had one sister, Josephine Burns who preceded her in death. Marion relocated to McLean, Virginia in 1967 with her husband, Alfred Maskin, and their two daughters. Although she had lived outside of New York for the past 46 years, she never lost her trademark New York accent.
Marion worked as an executive secretary in various industries -- the Seafarers International Union (SIU), National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), and GTE Corporation. After "failing retirement" from GTE, Marion became the Business Manager at Saint Stephen Martyr Catholic Church until her successful retirement in 2010.
Fondly nicknamed "Popette" by her family and close friends, Marion's faith was an integral part of her life. She was an avid traveler who loved to experience different cultures and share those times with family and friends. Until recently, she could be found researching and planning her next adventure. She was an elegant hostess who loved to entertain, never missing a party herself, and spent much of her free time at the theater, walking around her Foggy Bottom neighborhood, and keeping up with current events.
She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Martinez and Janice Rivas; son-in-law Luis A. Rivas; and grandchildren Christopher Koth, Stephen Rivas and Alexa Rivas.
The family will receive friends at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203 on Friday, July 12 from 4-7pm.
A funeral mass will be held at Saint Stephen Martyr Church, 2436 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20037 on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10am.
Interment to follow at National Memorial Park.
