Marjorie Louise McConnell, 94, of Fredericksburg, died Saturday, March 8, 2014, following complications from recent surgery. A long-time resident of Arlington County, Virginia, Mrs. McConnell had been living at Fredericksburg’s Chancellor’s Village Retirement Community since 2006. Known by all for being exceedingly kind and soft-spoken, she was a favorite among the residents and staff at Chancellor’s Village, and by her many friends and relatives. Mrs. McConnell was born in Petersburg, PA, on November 24, 1919, during the administration of President Woodrow Wilson. She was the second daughter of David Ross Haulman and Nettie Mae Howell, both of whom died before Mrs. McConnell reached adulthood. She is survived by her three sisters, Rena Belle Westbrook of Arlington, VA, Doris Renninger of Huntingdon, PA, and Janet Henney of Camp Hill, PA, as well as by her daughters Linda Schiavi, Rosemary Bott, and Janet McConnell, and by her son, David M. McConnell. Mrs. McConnell also enjoyed her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. McConnell was married for 49 years to Michael J. McConnell, who passed away in January 1990. Their wedding occurred on October 19, 1940, and shortly afterwards Mr. McConnell served honorably in the United States Army during World War II. On January 4, 1945, Mr. McConnell was wounded in combat in Belgium, and he later received the Purple Heart. After the war, Mr. McConnell was employed by the Veteran’s Administration until his retirement in 1977. He is interred at Arlington National Cemetery, and soon will be reunited there with his beloved Marjorie. A funeral service will be held at Murphy’s Funeral Home in Arlington, VA, on Friday March 14 at 11:00AM, with a later graveside ceremony at Arlington Cemetery. Mrs. McConnell was a treasure, and she will be missed by everyone who knew her.
