Ramon Mendez

Ramon Mendez (or Moncho as his friends and loved ones called him), 96 years old of Ballston, VA was called to Our Heavenly Father’s home on Feb 22nd, 2024 while residing at The Jefferson in Arlington, VA. Born in San Sebastián, Puerto Rico to Pedro and Victoria (Rivera) Mendez on February 16th, 1928 he was one of ten siblings. Ramon was kind beyond words, generous to a fault, caring, loving, and gentle. He was above all else a devoted husband, father, son, and brother. He was also known for being loyal, hard-working, jovial, as well as for his quick wit and terrific sense of humor. He was often seen cracking jokes to make people around him laugh. One example is when he was half-jokingly barred from visiting a relative in the hospital for fear that he would make her laugh so hard that she would “pop her stitches.” As a young man he emigrated from Puerto Rico to the mainland US to build a better life for himself. He returned to Puerto Rico to marry the love of his life Maria Luisa Mendez (who preferred to be addressed as Lola) whom he’d known since childhood and to whom he was happily married for 59 years. Together they endured many hardships including the death of two sons: Bertito at age 3 and a stillborn baby. They also celebrated many achievements including building a thriving business from the ground up and raising their daughter Elizabeth. It is in the latter that Ramon’s and Maria’s faith in God, strength, love, and fierce devotion shone through. All parents are special but the parents of a disabled child are hand-picked by God. After being told that their baby girl would not survive to see her first birthday, they would not accept that would be her fate. From that day forward they dedicated themselves to care for and help her not only survive but thrive. Every birthdate, milestone, and accomplishment was a living testimony to their boundless love and selfless devotion.

Ramon is survived by his daughter – Elizabeth, and his siblings Carmen Luz, Domingo, and Teodoro as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria, his son – Bertito, his parents – Pedro and Victoria, and his siblings Pedro, Delfina, Juan, Quintina, Ramona, and Herminia.

A public viewing will be held at Murphy Funeral Home in Ballston, VA on Thursday, February 29th from 4-7PM. A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Arlington, VA on Saturday, March 2nd at 10 AM.

El Padre Todopoderoso llamó a su hijo Ramon Méndez (o Moncho como le llamaban su familia y amistades), al Reino del Cielo el 22 de febrero de 2024 a los 96 años de edad. Durante los últimos 12 años, Moncho residió en El Jefferson en Arlington, VA. El nació el 16 de febrero de 1928; sus padres fueron Pedro y Victoria (Rivera) Méndez y era uno de diez hijos. Ramón fue amable más allá de las palabras, generoso hasta el extremo, afectuoso, cariñoso y gentil. Fue, por encima de todo, un excelente esposo, padre, hijo y hermano abnegado. También era conocido por ser leal, trabajador, jovial, así como por su sentido del humor. A menudo se le veía haciendo chistes para hacer reír a la gente que lo rodeaba. Un ejemplo es cuando, medio en broma, le prohibieron visitar a un familiar en el hospital por temor a que la hiciera reír tanto que se le "reventaran los

puntos". Cuando era joven, emigró de Puerto Rico a los Estados Unidos para buscar una mejor vida. Regresó a Puerto Rico para casarse con el amor de su vida María Luisa Méndez (quien prefería que la llamaran Lola) quienes se conocían desde la niñez y con quien estuvo felizmente casado por 59 años. Juntos sobrevivieron muchas dificultades, incluyendo la muerte de dos hijos: Bertito a los 3 años y un bebé que nació muerto. También celebraron muchos logros, inclusive el de construir un próspero negocio y criar a su hija Elizabeth. Fue en este último punto donde aumentó la fe en Dios, la fuerza, el amor incondicional y la dedicación de Moncho y Lola. Todos los padres son especiales, pero los padres de un niño impedido son elegidos personalmente por Dios. Después de que les dijeron que su bebé no sobreviviría para ver su primer cumpleaños, no aceptaron que ese sería su destino. A partir de ese día se dedicaron a cuidarla y ayudarla no sólo a sobrevivir sino a prosperar. Cada fecha de nacimiento, cada triunfo y logro fue un testimonio vivo de su amor y devoción por su hija. Gracias a dios por la bendicion de su larga vida. Nos quedamos con sus enseñanzas de valentia , generosidad, humildad y amor hacia todos.

A Moncho le sobreviven su hija, Elizabeth, y sus hermanos Carmen Luz, Domingo y Teodoro, así como numerosas sobrinas y sobrinos. Le precedieron en la muerte su esposa Lola, su hijo, Bertito, sus padres, Pedro y Victoria, y sus hermanos Pedro, Delfina, Juan, Quintina, Ramona y Herminia.

Se llevará a cabo una vista pública en Murphy Funeral Home en Ballston, VA, el jueves 29 de febrero de 4-7 PM. Se llevará a cabo una misa fúnebre en la iglesia católica Our Lady Queen of Peace el sábado, 2 de marzo a las 10 AM.
