
Richard (Dick) J. Saunders, born January 18, 1934, lifelong resident of Arlington, VA, passed peacefully on February 21, 2014, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lucile Saunders. Dick is survived by Shirley K. Saunders, his wife of 44 years, 7 children: Richard Jr. (Josephine), Doug (Janet), Sandy (Russell), Tim (Robin), Jenny (Darran), Chris (Wendy), and Jessica; 21 grandchildren, 10 siblings, and many nieces and nephews. Dick established Airway Sheet Metal Co. in 1963 celebrating its 50th year in 2013. Dick attended Washington Lee High School in Arlington, VA and was active in sports; including golden gloves boxing, football, basketball, and fast pitch softball. He coached the Black Knights Football Little League in the 1960s and 70s, and was also active in the Overlee Swim team in the 1980s. Viewing will be at Murphy Funeral Home, 4510 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, VA on February 27, 2014, 2:00 to 4:00, and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral on February 28, 2014, 11:00 AM at St. Ann Catholic Church, 5300 N. 10th Street Arlington, VA., and Christian burial at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the National Parkinson's Foundation and/or Hospice Care.
