She lived an early life of hardship near Portland, Oregon, the eldest and caregiver of her five siblings.
For 52 years she was a supportive wife to her husband, Carl, maintaining their home business, later traveling the States showing the patented machines that Carl had invented.
Bertie gave birth to five children, two of whom died at birth. After Carl’s death in 2003, Bertie carried on for 17 more years, building a life of her own, buying a home, earning her GED at the age of 72, and serving as volunteer for schools and nursing homes.
Bertie is survived by her children, Cheryl Johnson (Stephen), Shirley King (Kent), Harold Bray, sister Mary Ellen Lewis; also three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, multiple nieces, nephews, inlaws and cousins.
With her kind and gentle nature, and strong spirit, Bertie was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
