Born on March 28, 1922 to Ed and Mary Meins, Clara was a proud farm girl on the Sedro Woolley Prairie. She was third of the five siblings with brothers, Raymond, Norman, Walter and sister, Pat (who survives her, residing in Reno Nevada). Clara attended Sedro Woolley schools and excelled in all athletic activities. She was the belle of the ball and the life of the party. She met Roger, her husband of 40 years, at a locale dance hall, while being chaperoned by her doting older brothers. She married at the age of 18 and they moved to Darrington in 1945 to establish the Three Rivers Shingle Mill along with Bob and Ivan Jones. They raised four sons, Bob (Diane), Jan, Dene(Lyla) and Larry (Leslie). Clara and Roger were very active within the community, and she was a charter member of the Darrington Garden Club, dedicated to the beautification of Darrington, Hospital Guild and assisted in petitioning to bring the first bank to Darrington. Clara was one of the ladies in Darrington that did all the original varnishing of the wood in the community Center. Her working career spanned 26 years as a clerk at the Darrington Hardware where she happily assisted customers with knowledge garnered from her father on the farm. At home she spent many years providing her entire family with weekly Sunday dinners of fried chicken, homemade noodles and chocolate cake with peppermint frosting. Clara left us peacefully on December 15, 2017 and will be missing her favorite Christmas holiday. She created special memories for her children, 8 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren with her holiday baking, a tree surrounded by beautifully-wrapped gifts and the gathering of family. Clara was strong of body and strong of will and left this earth after 95 3/4 years with no regrets. She lived alone in her own home until the last few months. The family wishes to thank caregiver Diana Wagner and the Laurie Family Home Owner, Julie Ford and her staff for their compassion, patience and strength. A private family interment will be held at the Darrington Municipal Cemetery.
