Sherlund attended school in Niche, Osnabrock, Rolette, and Regan North Dakota…
After graduating from Regan High School, he attended Northwest College in Seattle, now known as Northwest University. His time in Seattle led him to become interested in police work. After his studies at the Police Academy, he spent some years in the Seattle Police Department and retired from the Edmonds Police Department.
After retiring from police work, Sherlund continued working by driving commercial trucks, school buses, and cars for Mission Motors.
In 1970, Sherlund met and married Nola Loge. Sherlund had adopted Linda before they married and together they adopted Jared Christopher. Sherlund loved his children and family. Both Sherlund and Nola became active in their church and communities while first living in Alderwood Manor, WA; then Huson, MT; and finally, Arlington, WA. They both loved raising horses and dogs. Often they rode the trails in the Cascade Mountains of Washington and the mountains of western Montana.
Sherlund was a great storyteller. His autobiography has stories of his adventures in the SPD and EPD . The stories are very poignant and in Sherlund’s perspective-- as a naïve North Dakota boy going to the big city of Seattle-- to the choices he made to uphold the laws of the city, state and Federal laws and to protect the life and property of our citizens.
Sherlund cared deeply for his friends and family. He was a man of deep faith in God with a constant relationship with Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He believed in the power of prayer and loved the word of God.
Sherlund is preceded in death by his son, Jared Christopher Smith, his three brothers-two babies and Lloyd Smith; his mother and father, Lydia and Marion Smith. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Nola L. Smith; his brother Marlin Smith; his daughter Linda Flynn; four grandchildren, Chelsea Knutsen, Casey Anderson, Robert Smith, and Joshua Smith; seven great-grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; along with wonderful extended family members.
Memorial Service--October 1st at 4:00 PM with a catered meal after. Held at Arlington Assembly of God, 201 N Stillaguamish Ave, Arlington, WA 98223.
