Born September 25, 1951, in Union County, Ohio, William was the son of the late William L. and Zeta (Sherwood) Hickok. A lifelong learner and history enthusiast, he had a deep passion for Civil War history—especially the Battle of Gettysburg—and could often be found sharing stories, facts, and insights with anyone who would listen.
William proudly served his country in the United States Army, a period of service that deeply shaped his sense of duty, discipline, and honor.
On October 2, 1971, William married the love of his life, Reta, beginning a devoted partnership that spanned 54 years. Their love endured life’s challenges, including William’s battle with lung cancer, which he bravely survived. Together, they raised a family grounded in love, laughter, and lasting values.
William was a loving husband, an incredible father, and a proud Papaw.
He is survived by his wife, Reta Hickok; his children, Brandon (Tanya) Hickok and Angie (the late Brandon) Whipp; and his grandchildren, Maddy, Anna, and Jacob, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Ernie (Velma) Hickok and Mae Schilling (the late Jim), and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jim (Phyllis) Hickok.
William’s life will be honored with a graveside service on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Ashland Cemetery at 2:00 PM. The family will also host a celebration of life at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share memories, laughter, and stories that reflect his generous spirit and kind heart.
