She was born in Stoney Creek, Virginia, on August 10, 1937, to the late John A. Jarratt, Jr. and the late Belle J. Jarratt. She is reunited with her loving and devoted husband, Rev. R. Stuart Carlton,
to whom she was married for 61 years.
Audrey lived her childhood as a farmer's daughter and one of eight children. She worked hard on the farm, her home, and her academics. She graduated from Stony Creek High School and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. She spent her career teaching elementary school children, and she taught Sunday School on the weekends. For decades, she sang in the church choir and uniquely sang as a tenor! She was a devoted and loving mother to her children. She loved cooking yeast bread and soup so that she could share them with neighbors, the elderly, and those who were ill. She perpetually cleaned her home so that it was always prepared for visiting church members. As a youth, she played softball and played the piano for her church. She was reared with strong family values and devotion to her Lord. While playing the piano for revival
services, she caught the eye of the young preacher, and she married Stuart soon thereafter. Their ministry would take them from Norfolk to Richmond to Salem. She always had endless energy!
Upon retirement, Audrey and Stuart moved to Ashland, Virginia, and Winterhaven, Florida. Life was spent together, with friends and service to the local church. Their final move took them to Daleville,
Virginia to the Glebe Retirement Center. Again, they enjoyed time together, and with friends, especially John and Juanita Fox. Card games and bingo were among mom’s favorites, as well as
devotions and sing-alongs. She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy every night. She ended her evening with two hours of praying for everyone she knew. She was a prayer warrior! Her
deepest desire was for her family to know and love Jesus. She is now in heaven with her Lord, our dad, her family, and friends. Well done, good and faithful servant!
