

Goodman, Ernest Muriel, 82, of Ashland, VA passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2016 surrounded by family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Norman Goodman and Mary Frances Hall Goodman; also by brothers, Norman Goodman, Jr. and Lewis Price Goodman; and sisters, Margaret Ann Smith, Virginia Swift, and Marion Jones. Born and raised in Beaverdam, VA, Ernest began a career with the railroad when joining the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad “Chessie System” in 1952 and retired after 40 years of service from CSX Corporation. Being retired gave him more time to enjoy his family, a little traveling, and his gardening, which he was also happy to share with neighbors and friends. He also did some volunteering for the American Red Cross and a few side jobs with Colesville Nursery and Martins Groceries. Ernest was very active in the Ruritan National Organization serving local, district and national levels, and was a 52 year perfect attendance recipient from the Clay Springs Ruritan Club. He also helped organize several High school Ruriteen Clubs in the Chesapeake District Ruritan. Ernest loved his church and was an active participant in the Beaverdam United Methodist Church while growing up and then Slash Christian Church where he was honored as an Elder Emeritus. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Jean Loving Goodman; sons, Glenn and Alan (Torrie) and daughters, Sue Franz (George) and Carolyn Putnam (Tom).; four grandchildren, Lauren (Jesse), Tyler (Jessica), Amy (Jon), and Tristan; two great-grandchildren, Jonas and Abel; brothers, Charles Goodman (Ann) of Huntington, W. VA and William “Billy” Goodman (Kathy) of Arnold, MD.; many nieces and nephews as well as extended family members and friends; and a very special friend, Valerie Foster. The family wishes to thank the Medi Home Health and Hospice team of very caring and loving caregivers who became friends. The family will receive friends from 2-4pm & 6-8pm on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland, VA 23005, where services will be held at 2pm on Monday, November 7, 2016. Interment will be at Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover, VA. In lieu of flowers, at Ernest’s request, please make memorial contributions to Slash Christian Church Preservation Fund, Slash Christian Church, Disciples of Christ at 11353 Mt. Hermon Rd., Ashland, VA 23005.
