

Nelson served with the U.S. Army 6th Infantry Division- a Division that saw 306 days of combat in the Pacific. Nelson saw action in New Guinea and the Philippines and was stationed with the Army of Occupation in South Korea after the war ended, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. He retired from the Postal Service in 1985.
Nelson was pre-deceased by his precious wife of 66 years, Grace Hall Eddleton. He was the youngest son of Lucious Earnest Eddleton and Sadie Lane Eddleton and was raised by his Aunt, Lucy Ann Eddleton Stanley Rice and Uncle, Walter Rice. Nelson lived in his beloved Montpelier, Virginia, and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1941. He is also pre-deceased by his great-granddaughter, Darian Eckhardt; his brothers: Earnest, Henry Lee, Mason, and Elvin Lee, and by his sister, Viola Eddleton Duke.
Nelson is survived by his brother Bert Eddleton (Bonnie) and sister Adell Eddleton Miller. He is also survived by his daughter Joan Carol Eddleton, three granddaughters: Donna Eckhardt (Richard Wagner), Tiffany Matthews (John Matthews), Stephanie Reed (Colonel Dale Reed, retired), great-granddaughters: Delaney Eckhardt (Tate), Linden Matthews Moore (Jozif), Lucy Matthews, Laney Matthews, and great-grandsons: Donald K. Eckhardt III (Lindsey), Andrew Reed, Harrison Reed, Noah Reed, Hudson Reed, Zachary Wagner, and Joshua Wagner.
Nelson loved everyone and everyone loved him in return. His nieces and nephews were very important to him as were the men and women of Winn's Baptist Church and the members of Newfound Church of Christ. He loved the Lord, his country, and his family and could have given lessons on how to be the best husband, father, and grandfather and was a true Southern gentleman. Nelson was a member of VFW Post 10657, American Legion Post 244, and Winn's Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 11, 2024, at 11 am at Winn's Baptist Church at 12320 Winns Church Road, Glen Allen, Virginia 23059. Visitation will be at the church from 9:30-11 am with the funeral service starting promptly at 11 am. Interment with military honors immediately following the service at the Church's Cemetery.
