Gary George Vitek, 80, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 10, 2026, surrounded by the family and friends who meant the world to him. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, on September 21, 1945, Gary lived a life defined by service, faith, and family.
Gary served his country in the U.S. Navy and went on to protect his community for 33 years in law enforcement, retiring from the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. During his tenure, he was passionately involved in the Adopt a Senior program and an integral part of the initiative to bring National Night Out to Hanover County. Guided by a deep and abiding faith, he was a devoted deacon at Taylorsville Baptist Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge.
If you knew Gary, you knew what he loved: military history, the outdoors, trips to the beach, his Italian heritage, an excellent meal, and a hot cup of coffee. But nothing brought him more joy than his family. He was a fiercely proud father to his son, Chad, and an incredibly doting grandfather.
His legacy lives on through his wife of 49 years, Sandra Jackson Vitek; his son, Chad (Christina) Vitek; his granddaughters, Brooke and Kelsey; his twin brother, Joseph F. Vitek, Jr. (Betty); and many extended family members and friends who will miss his steady presence
Relatives and friends are invited to Gary's visitation at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA 23005, on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at Taylorsville Baptist Church, 15415 Taylorsville Rd, Doswell, VA 23047, on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Elon Baptist Church, 14031 Verdon Rd, Ruther Glen, VA 22546.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a local animal shelter or Taylorsville Baptist Church.
