

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Jim attended St. Mary's School, where he was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps, and graduated from Nutley High School. In his early years, he worked at his family’s floral business in Jersey City & Carlstadt, NJ. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, and later earned an MBA in Computer Systems from The American University. Jim was a Specialist 4 in the 3rd US Infantry Regiment of the United States Army Presidential Honor Guard, known as the “Old Guard,” and was part of many prestigious events and White House ceremonies. He was employed for the majority of his career with the United States Government, Department of Health and Human Services, and for a period taught computer classes in the evenings at the University of MD, College Park.
Jim was a world traveler-having visited over 50 countries on numerous cruises, tours and international flights with his family! He appreciated time at his beach house and on his pontoon boat the “Happy Crab” in Ocean Pines, MD. He loved tackling home construction projects, Ann’s Chihuahua Pepper, chocolate, a good cup of coffee and a great conversation. He will be remembered as generous, extremely thoughtful, funny and hardworking.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward Von Bargen and Martha (Halpin) Von Bargen and his wife, Mildred “Ann” Von Bargen. He is survived by his children, Christopher (Elizabeth) Von Bargen of New Freedom, PA, and Joseph Von Bargen of Ashland, VA; grandchildren London Von Bargen (daughter of Joseph) and Connor Von Bargen (son of Christopher and Elizabeth); sister Jane Von Bargen Smith of Cumming, GA and brother William Von Bargen, Sr. of Leesburg, FL.
Family and friends will be received on Friday, November 8, 2024 at 10:00am at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 105 S. Snead Street, Ashland, VA, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00am.
