Janice Kay Chick

November 26, 1945August 17, 2019

After a battle with cancer, Janice Kay Chick (73) passed away on Saturday, August 17th in her home, surrounded by loving family. Janice was a talented gardener, who cultivated a beautiful collection of plants in her home garden. She knew how to show her plants the love and attention they needed to grow and thrive, and the same can be said – even more so – for the love and attention she gave her family. Through her love came four children, nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild, each with whom she shared a special connection. More recently, Janice worked to obtain the Hanover County Emergency Response Team certification in order to serve the community that she loved. Her wit, sense of humor, and sharp tongue will be missed by all those who knew her.

Janice is survived by her loving partner of ten years, Robert Kotrba; her children Brian Hopping (Cindy), Holly Maslanka (Joseph), Dawn Baker (Scott), and Jon Hopping (Heidi); her grandchildren Amber, Anthony, Noel, Nicholas, Tyler, Nathan, Katie, Haley, and Paul; great grandchild Alec; mother Mary Louise Faust; stepmother Dottie Chick; and siblings Patricia Brademyer, Connie Chick, Randy Chick (Shirley), and Buddy Chick (Amy). Janice was preceded in death by father Vern Chick and stepfather Lou Faust.

Never one for formalities or making a fuss, Janice decided to forego a formal funeral. A private memorial will be held at a later date in her beautiful home garden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden – one of Janice’s favorite places to spend a quiet afternoon. Visit giving.lewisginter.org to make a contribution.

My first born - a beautiful baby girl (you cried all night and slept all day) but you overcame the sleeping habits, and became a beautiful person. You will be missed.

I know Janice as the mother of my best friend, and have seen her off and on over many years through this family connection. Janice always had a smile for me and an interest in me or my family when we connected at gatherings. As parents we hope that we are able to impart values to our children and perhaps a part of our legacy lives on through them. Janice had success in this by bringing four children in this world who have contributed and touched others in their own way. Her eldest child Brian is my most familiar example, as he is caring, highly intelligent and kind to others. He has helped myself and others as a friend, a brother, and fellow father over the decades, but never more so than recently with the sudden and unexpected loss of my own son Cameron. “In this life no person is really alone, as those who live no more echo within our thoughts and words and what they did has become woven into what we are ( Part of a poem written by Richard Fife). Janice, rest well and may your spirit carry on in the next life knowing your memory and legacy is alive and well in your children, and your gift of life continues through them. Dave Roletter

I met Janice through the Community Emergency Response Team.
We were in the same class. I always sat with her or talked with her at the meetings for CERT. I also saw Robert and her at the Senior Day events. With her concern for others, she was always asking me how I was doing.
I am just so devastated. I wish I'd known she was sick. Maybe I could have done something to help her or just let her know I would be there for her.
Treasure all the wonderful memories that you have of her.
May you find peace at this difficult time.

From the moment she joined the CERT training class, Janice was full of excitement, wanting to be able to help her family and community. Janice volunteered her time generously to the Hanover CERT Unit. We shall truly miss her dedication and her bright smile! Our thoughts and prayers are with your family!
