John Warburton Carswell Sr.

John Warburton Carswell Sr., 82, of Ashland, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017. He was the son of Rev. Arthur D. Carswell and Madeline Warburton Carswell. Born in Raeford, N.C., he was one of seven children. John worked for 35 years for the Social Security and Health Care Finance Administration. He was a member of Ashland Presbyterian Church and an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Melton Carswell; sons, John "Jay" Carswell Jr. (Jill); Robert Carswell (Rebecca), Scott Carswell (Kimberly), David Carswell (Lori); grandchildren, Derek, Will, Thomas, Allison, Matthew, Nathan, Samuel, Jeffrey, and Ben; great-grandchildren, Emily, Evan, and Ella and sister, Jill Wallof (Hal). The family will receive friends on Friday, March 31, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland, VA 23005. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at 11:00 am at Ashland Presbyterian Church, 401 Virginia Street, Ashland, VA 23005. Interment will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
