Known to many as “Jonesie,” he was the son of John Ernest Jones, Sr. and Edith Sagle Jones. A lifelong resident of Montpelier, he devoted his life to his family, his many friendships, his community, his country, and the family business. Jonesie was the embodiment of a true gentleman—loyal, steady, and gracious—treating everyone he met with genuine kindness and respect. With a natural gift for connection, he took great pleasure in the company of others, always welcoming a visit, a gathering, or a shared meal. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad, spending time outdoors, running, and keeping a close eye on the news, the weather, UVA athletics, and the price of lumber. His warm sense of humor and calm, reassuring presence made him a joy to be around, and he led his life with a strong moral compass, setting a quiet but powerful example for those who knew him.
Jonesie was married to Barbara Duke Jones, the love of his life, for 53 years until her passing. Their marriage was marked by deep affection, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to family and community. Together, they instilled in their three children the values of responsibility, kindness, and service. He took great pride in his children and their families, and found immense joy in being a grandfather. He delighted in following the activities and adventures of his seven grandchildren and in gathering his family around him.
After attending Montpelier School, he graduated from St. Christopher’s School in 1951 and earned his degree from the University of Virginia in 1955. A devoted UVA sports fan, he followed his Cavaliers faithfully. He served his country in the United States Army in the 1950s and was stationed in London during his active duty, an experience he valued greatly.
Jonesie grew up in the lumber business - “sawdust was in his blood.” After returning from military service in 1958, he joined the J. E. Jones Lumber Company full-time. He dedicated his entire career to the business, remaining actively involved until his passing. His commitment, pride, and steady leadership were hallmarks of his work and his life.
He was actively engaged in numerous civic, business, and religious organizations. His involvement included the Ashland Kiwanis Club, serving as a director of First Virginia Bank, and participating in several forestry and lumber manufacturing associations. A man with deep and abiding faith, he was a lifelong member of Shiloh United Methodist Church, where he served faithfully in many leadership roles and found enduring fellowship.
Jonesie was predeceased by his wife and his parents. He is survived by his sister, Betsy Jones Ware; his brothers-in-law, Lunsford Andrew Duke, Jr. (Rebecca) and John Michael Duke, Sr. (Jeanean); his children, Anne Noel Jones Dawson (Alec), John Ernest Jones III (Krista), and Barbara Sagle Jones Purcell (Tup); and his grandchildren, Katherine Bruce Dawson, William Robert Dawson, John Ernest Jones IV, Stefan Andrew Jones, Edith Addison Purcell, Charles Tupper Purcell, Jr., and Carter Andrew Purcell. He is also survived by loving nephews and a niece.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his devoted caregivers, Amina Salifu, Vida Darko, and Abigail Arthur, whose compassion and attentive care brought him comfort and dignity.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jonesie's visitation on Friday, May 1, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Nelson Funeral Home, 412 South Washington Highway, Ashland, Virginia. A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, May 2, at 11:30 a.m. at Shiloh United Methodist Church, 17420 Shiloh Church Road, Montpelier, Virginia 23192.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shiloh United Methodist Church or the Montpelier Center for Arts & Education.
