Patricia Koontz

KOONTZ, Patricia, of Ashland, saw the promise of the resurrection on July 27, 2016. She was the daughter of the late Eldon and Sadie Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Koontz, Jr.; brother, Eldon S. Phillips, Jr.; and sister, Louella Rehmann. She is survived by her daughter, Heather Gómez and her husband, Victor Gómez; granddaughter, Jessenia Gómez. She also leaves special friends that cherish her memory: Shelia Hitt, Kyle Bevins, Brock Hitt and his family, and Matthew Zavitz. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Faye Fortune, Tricia Wetzel, Wandra Ratliff Hill, Courtni Tapp, and Autumn Poe for their compassion and care.

Pat retired as a director of the Virginia Society of CPA’s to dedicate her time to her family and church. She was an active member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, in Ashland, VA. Pat embraced every opportunity to demonstrate God’s love in action through missions to God’s people. Pat served on the SEJ Board United Methodist Volunteers in Missions and directed mission teams to Mexico, Front Royal, The Eastern Shore, and Awendaw, SC among other places. She was one of the founding volunteers of the Society of St. Andrew fighting to end hunger. Pat was a fierce advocate and friend of the six tribes of Virginia Indians. She worked tirelessly to affirm their federal recognition and support their tribal sovereignty. She stated that her family continued to be her biggest accomplishment in life and was an example of Christ to all who knew her. She cherished her moments with her friends and family, especially her granddaughter and she now may cherish her moments reunited with her beloved husband.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at 3pm at Duncan Memorial UMC with Reverends Tim Gerde, Dwight Zavitz and Victor Gómez officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date at Mountain Valley UMC Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Society of St. Andrew at 3383 Sweet Hollow Rd., Big Island, VA 24526.
