

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas H. Slater Jr. and Jean Walton Slater, and his brother, Thomas Guy Slater.
Richard worked as a farm worker and had a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. He spent many years living and working on the farm, where he found a sense of purpose and joy in the simple life he loved. He worked for Bootsy and Laura Stanley, who were very good to him and treated him with kindness and respect. Richard was grateful for the time he spent with them and for the care and friendship they shared with him throughout the years. He was a member of Mount Olive Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, working puzzles, and simply being surrounded by the beauty of nature.
He is survived by his sisters, Betty Ellis and Deborah S. Abernathy and her husband, John; along with two nieces and five nephews, Shannon Slater, Christy Smith (Troy), Thomas Guy Slater (Tracy), Mike Slater (Suzanne), David Ellis (Misty), Christopher S. Abernathy (Christie), and Frank J. Abernathy (Trisha); as well as his extended great-nephews and great-nieces, and extended family and friends who will cherish his memory.
Richard will be remembered for his quiet appreciation of nature, his love of reading and puzzles, and the special place he held in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
The service will be held at Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 15583 Coatesville Rd., Beaverdam, VA. Service to be announced.
