Obituary of Robert William Herzog
HERZOG, Robert Williams, 93, of Beaverdam, died peacefully at his farm on Wednesday, January 11, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Gwendolyn Herzog and Albert Herzog; and his granddaughter, Ashley Herzog. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Beryl Beck Herzog; two children, Gwendolyn Herzog Leech (Steve) and Andrew Herzog (Kathy); four grandchildren, Charles Leech, Preston Leech, Shelby Herzog and Robert Herzog II (Jaclyn). He was a member of our greatest generation. Immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy after Pearl Harbor and was honorably discharged when it was over. Bob attended Randolph-Macon College, where he played basketball and football. That experience led him to a lifetime in education at Beaverdam School, Norfolk Academy, Hampton Roads Academy and 29 years at St. Christopher's School, where he served as athletic director, head football coach, assistant headmaster, business manager and teacher. He served as chairman of the State Evaluation Committee and was founder and executive director of the Virginia Prep League. Bob also loved his country and especially his Beaverdam community. He was involved in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis, Junior Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Ruritan, Rouzie's Chapel, The Virginia House Council, the "Save Beaverdam Depot" board and was a Master Mason. Bob loved his God, family, students, players and his farm more than anything. His family was often astonished that he remembered them all even shortly before his passing. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, at Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va. 23005, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 18. A private burial will be held at Sunnyside Farm in Beaverdam. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rouzie's Chapel Methodist Church, 21089 Green Bay Rd., Beaverdam, Va. 23015 or St. Christopher's School, 711 St. Christopher's Rd., Richmond, Va. 23226.
