Obituary of Shelley Ann Lewis Barrett
IN THE CARE OF

Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory - Reid Chapel

Shelley Ann Lewis Barrett, 46, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away July 21, peacefully surrounded by her loving family and the spirit of God Almighty. She is survived by her devoted husband Thomas Joseph Barrett; parents John and Sue Ann Hardwick Lewis of Ashland, Virginia; and sister Shannon Lewis, brother-in-law Doug Gouldin, and nieces Mia and Hayley. She is also survived by godmother Linda Gunn and goddaughter Juliana, as well as numerous family members, close friends, and colleagues. We thank God for her life and love.

Shelley grew up in Midlothian, Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition, Foods and Exercise. She was a Registered Dietitian (RD) through the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, along with a Licensed Dietitian (LD) through the state of Maryland. She also held the very notable Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) certification which involves a rigorous process of learning and maintaining a detailed understanding of diabetes care and management. She was dedicated to holistic nutrition and healing and maintained a passion for over 20 years supporting others in finding their own journey to wellness.

Shelley married Tom of West Orange, New Jersey in December 2019. They enjoyed a marvelous, happy life in Silver Spring, Maryland. Their time together was spent relaxing on the beaches of New Jersey and Virginia, visiting wineries, eating at their favorite restaurants, and going to concerts. Shelley loved cooking and trying out new recipes; listening to music from her favorite artists like Sarah McLachlan; visiting her family, especially her nieces Hayley and Mia, whom she loved dearly; and spending time with close friends. She loved to sing and enjoyed performing with the Midlothian High School Chorus and Show Choir, Virginia Tech Madrigal Group, a cappella group in Silver Spring, and the Washington Chorus of DC. She also enjoyed travel and adventure, completing a mission trip to Honduras with Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Youth and a special spiritual journey with Chrysalis, participating in Virginia Tech’s Study Abroad program in Switzerland where she made friendships that continue today, and competing in the Lums Pond Mini-Triathlon in Delaware. She had a passion for wellness and was always looking for ways to improve the lives of those around her. Shelley loved children. Shelley’s other interests included horseback riding, hiking, gardening, jewelry, mermaids, and the Virginia Tech Hokies. The family would like to recognize long-standing friends Bobbi, Lisa, Sarah, and Virginia for holding a special place in Shelley’s heart. The family would also like to thank all the friends and medical professionals who supported Shelley, particularly Dr. Veronica Stevens Jackson, Dr. Fishman, and Chris Banks.

Shelley lit up every room she entered. Her smile and laughter were contagious. She was the most generous and loving person with great courage and strength. She leaves behind her husband, family, and many friends, all of whom will dearly miss her. One of Shelley’s favorite scriptures was Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

A celebration of life service will take place at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 3 at Lebanon Methodist Church located at 8492 Peaks Road, Hanover, Va, 23069. Guests will be invited to share their favorite memories of Shelley. Immediately following the service, all are invited for refreshments. Guests are encouraged to celebrate Shelley’s life by wearing pink and a big smile!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in loving memory of Shelley Ann Lewis Barrett.
