On May 21, Saskatchewan lost a living history of the Crane Valley, Ormiston, Readlyn, and Assiniboia areas. On that day, Bernice Woolhouse left us. Bernice was born November 22, 1929 on the family farm, to Lou and Eva Schoffer. She had a happy childhood with her five sisters and brothers. On the farm, she learned the value of hard work, but she also enjoyed play with her sister Gladys - some of that was mischievous play.
At the age of 12, she moved to Readlyn to continue her education. There she lived with her grandparents. At the age of 14, she started working as a housekeeper, providing childcare for local shopkeepers.
At the age of 20, she met John Woolhouse at a card party at the Hepworth School. They married on December 17, 1951. They lived on the Woolhouse family farm, where they raised their three sons.
While farm life was busy, Bernice found time to be involved with the Readlyn Community Hall and Church. She organized Vacation Bible School with her beloved friend Doris.
Bernice and John were actively involved with square dancing. She volunteered for and organized activities for the 4H. Bernice volunteered with the Assiniboia Museum for 30 years. She received the Lieutenant Governor's Award, for service to her community.
Through the efforts of their son Dwayne, Bernice and John got to have tea with the Prince of Wales when he visited Assiniboia. In true prairie hospitality, Bernice baked a saskatoon pie for the occasion. It was the Prince's first tasting of saskatoons.
Bernice is predeceased by her husband, John. She is survived by her sons Barry (Nicole), Dwayne (Jeanne), and Curtis. She is also survived by sister Donna, brother Lyle, and sister-in-law Lucy. She will be dearly missed by her seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be held at Readlyn Cemetery, Readlyn, SK, on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 1:30 pm with Anette Pryce facilitating. Tributes by Barry Woolhouse, Therein Woolhouse, Clayton Pinfold and prayer by Art Brandt. Fellowship to follow at the Assiniboia 55 Club.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy for Bernice's family may be shared at www.rossfuneralservice.com. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
