Elmer was born on May 22, 1931 to Karl and Jean Hansen. He was the second of four children, with Isabell being the oldest, then Elmer, Vic and Elsie. Growing up in a large family made for plenty of stories. As Elsie and Isabell recollect, there was all sorts of foolishness. Elmer went to Wheat Bench School and would often run the 1 ½ miles to school. Later, when he was allowed to take the car, he would make the trip in record time –really speedy. When Elmer was younger his goal in life was to become an RCMP officer but by his early teens he was working on the farm and he had to quit school. In 1955 he wed his true love, Lorna Elizabeth Calibaba (Betty). Elmer and Betty started their married life working for local farmers and it was during this time, they had their only child Dallas. In the fall of 1959 Elmer and Betty had the opportunity to buy the Charlie Rustic farm. This is where they made their home and their life as a family. Elmer was a very good farmer and hard worker and spent many long days in the field or working cattle. Massey Ferguson equipment was the machinery Elmer liked to farm with. In 1976 Elmer bought his first new Massey 1155 which is still being used today. Elmer was a good storyteller with quite a sense of humour and he would get a twinkle in his eye when he told a good story. Elmer is predeceased by his parents, Karl and Jean, brother Vic, and brother-in-law Herschel Knoss. Left to mourn is his beloved wife Betty, son Dallas and wife Michele, grandchildren, Cody, Amanda, and Jesse, sisters Isabell (and husband Bill Schmidt), Elsie Knoss, sister-in-law, Opal Schick and numerous nieces and nephews. Say not in grief, “he is no more”, but live in thankfulness that, “he was”. Graveside service was held April 1, 2011 at the Rockglen Cemetery, followed by a celebration of Elmer’s life held at the Rockglen Community Hall. www.rossfuneralservice.com
