Emma was born to Michael and Helena Tiefenbach on June 15, 1917. She was the fourth child of seven in her family. She grew up on the family farm at Lakenheath and attended Lakenheath School. She helped with the family and farm chores. On May 27, 1938 she married George Hume at Peace Lutheran Church. They made their first home in the Lakenheath area and then moved to a farm seven miles north of Limerick. While living here, their only daughter Donna was born. In 1946 they moved to their farm one mile north of Limerick. Emma kept busy on the farm. She was a fabulous cook, gardener and homemaker. Her and George semi-retired to Assiniboia in 1977 but continued to farm until 1988 when they fully retired. However, even after they retired they still enjoyed coming out to the farm in the summer, keeping the yard up and cooking for the MacMillan’s when they were harvesting there. Faith was an important part of Emma’s life. She attended weekly worship, bible studies and was always excited about her ladies church meetings. Grandma loved knitting and quilting. If you stopped at her house for a visit, you would often find her in her favourite rocking chair, listening to the radio and knitting away. She made hundreds of afghans which she gave away for gifts or donated to various causes. She also loved knitting for the mitten tree each year at the church. Family and friends were important to Emma. She had a wonderful circle of friends. Emma was very fortunate to have her devoted daughter and grandson living close by to help her out in whatever she needed. Emma was thrilled when she became a great-grandma, she bragged she was a ‘great’. She loved Dustin, Connor and Paige very much and was always interested in whatever they were doing. Emma moved into the Prairie Villa in 2007 and due to deteriorating health she moved into the Lafleche and District Health Center in May 2010. She passed away peacefully on May 27, 2011, the same date she married George some 73 years ago. Emma was predeceased by her parents, her husband George (1995), son-in-law Don (2003), niece Marg Henry (2009), and nephew Harold Ermel (2010). She was also predeceased by all of her siblings and in the past few months reminded everyone that she was the only one left in her family. She is survived by her daughter Donna, grandson Duncan (Jennifer) and her three ‘greats’ Dustin, Connor and Paige, all from Limerick, Sk.
