On Friday, August 14th, 2015, George’s suffering ended and he became Val and his family’s Guardian Angel. George Arthur was born on June 12, 1952, in Regina, SK, to the late G.T. Curran and his loving wife, Helene. He spent his life living in Coronach until his early teen years when he decided to spread his wings and venture out into the working world, to parts of Alberta and the Northwest Territories. In 1975, he returned to Coronach to join his Dad in the family business, known to all of you as Curran’s Esso Service Station. A few years later, when his Dad retired from the Bulk Agent, George took over that part of the business and became the local Imperial Agent. George put on many miles… delivering fuel around the Coronach, Rockglen, Big Beaver and Willow Bunch areas. Although he enjoyed many visits with the people he delivered to, George’s main passion was his towing business. No matter what time of day or night, or what the weather conditions were, George was ready to go… and Clarence, I’m sure you remember some of those trips. In November of 1989, George married his loving wife, Valerie Cowling, and that day, he became the stepdad to Baron, Robin, Terry and Tylor. That should have been enough excitement for one month, but then on November 24, 1989, Valerie gave birth to his namesake and only birth son, George James… more commonly known to us as GJ. George enjoyed holiday time, or going camping or “motelling it” with his family. This was also a time to place your bets on what time they would actually get away! George would say we are leaving at a certain time so be ready… but Val and the boys always knew it would be an hour or more later, as he was never known as a fast mover. He also enjoyed his many, many trips hauling GJ and his friends anywhere they wanted to go, from Rock Concerts to Ski Trips. They just had to ask and he would drop everything to take them. George was also an active member with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Coronach Elks. He spent many years on the Coronach Fire Department and then in the late 90’s, he took his EMT course and joined the Coronach Ambulance. George enjoyed life! He loved a good game of cards with family and friends. He enjoyed curling, whether it was playing the game or watching. He was a faithful fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and never missed watching many of their games. He also enjoyed watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders. George never really had a hobby to speak of, but Val will tell you, he did like to collect vehicles and go to the Regina Auto Auction! George loved to drive, so when Kelly and Neil Gent needed a driver, George got behind the wheel. In 2006, he went to Grande Prairie, Alberta for 2 years, then Lloydminster for 4 years driving trucks. In 2012, he was back in Coronach but continued to drive semi’s hauling gravel or grain for Brian Wrolson and Knudson Trucking. George drove up until August of 2013, as he was undergoing surgery for Bladder and Prostate Cancer. For the past 2 years, George has struggled with his health and Val was there to help and support him in every way. In February of this year, George suffered a stroke and became a resident first at the Coronach Health Centre and then in the Bengough Health Centre. Predeceased by his father G.T. Curran, in-laws James and Marj Cowling, George is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Valerie, his children: George James, Baron (Kiran), Robin (Freda), Terry (Alissa), Tylor (Melissa), 9 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; his mother Helene Curran, sister Mary (Clarence) Schnell, sisters-in-law Cheryl Dech and Karen (Cliff) Butchko, brother-in-law Garth (Cheryl) Cowling, nieces, nephews and their families along with many wonderful friends. Graveside Funeral Service was held Thursday, August 20, 2015, at 2:00 PM at the Coronach Cemetery. Hans Zoller officiated. Readers were Val Rousseau and Arlene Colibaba. Tribute, written by wife Val, was read by Merv Colibaba. Honorary Pallbearers ‘everyone who was a part of George’s life’. Pallbearers were his doting grandchildren Mathew Bailey, Chase Steadman, Sam and Kelsie Jackiw, Taylor Addisen, Bohden Jackiw, Dillyn and Alyza Jackiw. Soloist was Linda Poirier.
