John Kenneth Gronsdahl, age 89, of Moose Jaw SK, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at the Extendicare in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
John was born in the Assiniboia Union Hospital on December 15, 1931 to Oscar (Torgils Oli) and Inga (nee Indergard) Gronsdahl. He attended school at Advance, Congress, and Assiniboia (grade 12).
John received his Diploma of Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan in 1957 and his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in 1960. He was employed by the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture as a Farm Management Specialist in Swift Current.
John married Sharon Fay (Registered Nurse) on June 3, 1961.In September 1963 they moved to Oregon to where John completed his Master of Science in Agriculture Economics at Oregon State University. After completing his Masters in Oregon, John and Sharon returned to Swift Current where John was employed as a Farm Management Specialist. In 1967, he transferred to the Agriculture Economics branch research department in Regina. Later he became Supervisor of the Farm Management Division and then Director of the Agriculture Economics Branch and finally General Manager of Crop Insurance. In the spring of 1973, John moved his family back to the family farm west of Congress.
He served as councilor for RM Stonehenge #73 from 1976 to 1979 and Reeve in 1981 and 1982. John was presented with a Distinguished Graduate in Agriculture award in recognition for his contribution to Agriculture in Saskatchewan at the 75th anniversary of the College of Agriculture on July 5, 1986.
John loved the farm and this was inevitably the topic of conversation. John was an avid sports fan and passed this on to most of his children. He was a Toronto Maple Fan since he was a young boy listening to the games on the radio with his brother and was very involved in minor hockey with his sons.
John is predeceased by his wife Sharon (May 30, 2019) and survived by his four children: Morai (Cam) Forer and their sons Braden and Joel; Kirsten (Shane) Dodd and their daughters Chelsea (Dave) and Tamara; Jay (Joy) Gronsdahl and their children Sophie and Ethan; Mark Gronsdahl (Rob), and great grand children Willow and Wyatt. He is also survived by his brother Irvine (Eldeen) and nephew Kevin and niece Karla.
A private family service was held on Friday, June 4, 2021 at the Ross Funeral Chapel in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. Pastor Robert Langdon officiated. The family shared wonderful memories. Pallbearers were grandchildren: Braden, Joel, Chelsea, Tamara, Sophie, Ethan. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK.
