Karen Warken (Kornum) passed away March 27, 2024 at age 92. Predeceased by her husband Philip (Nov 1992), and daughter Vivian Lefebvre (2003), siblings Benjamin, Verona, Louris and Keith, Karen is survived by children Deborah (Brian) Scheltgen of Lafleche, Myles (Deborah) of Medicine Hat, son-in-law Gilles Lefebvre of Edmonton, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, sisters Shirley and Christine.
Mom was born June 12, 1931 to Chris and Alice Kornum on the family farm southwest of Fife Lake. She attended Goose Creek (country) School until Grade 8. She finished Grade 10 by correspondence.
Mom often spoke about the dry years, which were hard on everyone. Through the efforts of her parents, they were always “well-fed, clean and mended and very much loved”.
Leaving home at the age of 16, Mom moved to Lethbridge for a job at the hospital. Two years later, she returned home to Fife Lake.
Country dances were always popular and Mom loved to dance. This is how she met our Dad, Philip Warken, who she married in 1949 at Ceylon, SK.
Mom and Dad established and lived on their family farm near Coronach until Dad’s health deteriorated and they sold and moved to Assiniboia in 1960.
Mom was a determined, independent and hard-working woman. From an early age, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, singing with her sisters while their Dad accompanied them on the fiddle. It was her passion for cooking that sent her on a new career path as our parents became involved in the restaurant business for many years. Mom was famous for her cinnamon buns and ice cream.
Mom was a force of nature with love and positivity that consumed those around her. She was giving to a fault and never afraid to share her opinion with her loved ones.
Most of all, Mom cherished her time with family and friends.
Mom’s final years were spent in the care of the amazing staff at Ross Payant Long Term Care. Our family would like to thank them and Dr. Carulei for all their care and attention.
Loved, ALWAYS AND FOREVER . . .
