Larry Douglas Eldstrom
August 9, 1948 - January 12. 2022
It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Larry Eldstrom, age 73. He passed away peacefully at his home, ending his lengthy health issues. Larry will be lovingly cherished and remembered by his wife Joan Eldstrom: his children Vicki (Candice) Eldstrom and their children Sara and Chloe; Travis (Nicole) Eldstrom and their children Grace, Kadie and Mackenna; Kyla (Matthijs) Mak and their children Lucas and Tessa, his sister Audrey (Wayne) Griffin, sister Barbara Seymour-Gray, and sister-in-law May Jani, his mother-in-law Vivian Lusk; his sister-in-law Valerie (Rick) Barteski; brother-in law Gary Lusk; brother-in-law Bob (Steffanie) Lusk and sister-in-law Kathy (Bob) Carey. He will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Alvin and Eileen Eldstrom; brother Otto Jani; nephew Johnathan Jani; father-in-law Ken Lusk and brother-in-law Lewis G. Vasey.
Larry was born in Assiniboia, SK on August 9, 1948. He lived on the family farm where he attended Hawley Country School and later attended Assiniboia Composite High School. After his schooling he moved to B.C and then to Regina where he worked as a driving instructor, and a tire repairman.
In 1973, Larry moved home and purchased Les Okerman’s farm. He farmed with his parents until their retirement in the early 80’s. Larry continued to grow and expand the farm throughout his life. He was honored to have Travis and Nicole take over the family farm and see it continue into its fourth generation.
In 1977 Larry met Joan, a young nurse who recently moved to Assiniboia after finishing her Nursing degree. The two were married on November 18, 1978. They moved to the farm in 1980, where they built a new home and had three children: Vicki, Travis and Kyla.
Their years on the farm were busy. Between a young family, the workload of the farm and being Mr. Mom, Larry always was able to spend time with friends and family. Family was very important and he was very involved in his kids’ lives. Whether it was hockey, ringette, music, or school sports Larry was on the road and loving it. Somehow, between it all he managed to fit in many family trips, and two very memorable trips to Disneyland.
Larry was always an outdoorsman, and greatly enjoyed his time with his friends. Every fall, after harvest, his large group of friends would plan many elaborate trips to hunt and fish. He had many stories to tell of all the good times enjoyed and they will last a lifetime. His hunting friends all shared a special bond that will always be cherished.
While Larry loved to farm, he also loved everything that farm life brought with it. He enjoyed the closeness of community, working together and lending a hand. A steady stream of friends and neighbors were always welcome around the table.
Larry felt very strongly that part of his legacy would be the revitalization project of the Emmanuel Prairie Gardens. He wanted the church, where many of the area’s settlers are laid to rest, to always be remembered.
Larry suffered his first heart attack in 2003, and was unfortunately plagued by a litany of health issues afterword. On February 18, 2008, he received a double lung transplant, which will always be remembered as a life changing day. Larry worked hard to educate people on the tremendous gift that organ transplantation can bring to families. The idea that through someone else’s pain, his life was extended, overwhelmed him. Through this, he was able to attend his three children’s wedding, and witness the birth of his seven grandkids, which was a gift that his family will always be truly grateful for.
His Grandkids were the light of his life and this will always be his true legacy. During this last Christmas, he worked hard to convince the doctors to release him, from the hospital, so he could spend one last Christmas with his much loved family.
Larry will always be remembered by his jovial outlook on life, his outlandish stories, the glimmer in his eye, and his rich, full belly laugh.
Visitation was held at Messiah Lutheran Church, Assiniboia, SK Sunday Evening. Funeral Service was held at Messiah Lutheran Church, Assiniboia, SK on Monday January 17, 2022 at 1:00 pm.
