Mary Allsopp

Mary Anne Allsopp (nee Hovanak) of Bengough, SK passed away January 21, 2017 at the Bengough Health Center at the age of 98. Mary Anne was born October 8, 1918 in Toporez, Slovakia and came to Canada with her parents in 1928 to the Big Beaver area, then to the Bengough area where they farmed. Mary attended Desmond School and helped on the farm until her marriage to Arthur in 1942. Mary and Arthur had their first child Michael in 1943 and lived with her parents until Arthur was discharged from the Air Force in 1945. After settling on their farm in the Hardy district, Arthur and Mary had three more children, Marlene, Marguerite and Rita. Mary enjoyed gardening, canning, milking cows, baking, her turkeys and anything to do with caring for her family. She was a member of the CWL at St. Joseph’s, Ceylon for several years. Mary was predeceased by her husband Arthur, parents Michael and Susan Hovanak, her brother and sister-in-law Andy and Lena Hovanak and nephews Bernie and Roy Hovanak. She is survived by son Michael, daughters Marlene (Doug) McEwen, Marg (Joe) Gilmore, and Rita (Stan) Nyhus, 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Funeral Mass was held at 10:30 am, Thursday, January 26, 2017 at St. Michael’s RC Church, Bengough, SK. Celebrant was Father Anthony Pangan, and organist was Donna Morris. Tribute was given by granddaughter Danette Jensen, readers were granddaughter Michelle Scott and great-grandson Wyatt Scott, active and honorary pallbearers were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Interment followed in Bengough Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Twilight Home Auxillary, Box 437, Bengough, SK. Arrangements under the direction of Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
