Mom was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1997, her parents Dan and Mary Straza, her son Laurance in 2012, her sons-in-law Terry Torgerson August 2016 and Dr. Doug McAlpine 2011, great-grandson Seth England 2013, five brothers and three sisters. Mary is survived by her three daughters, Caroline Torgerson, Ginny McAlpine and Lou (John) Klepsch; as well as two sons, Carl and Virgil (Donna), daughter-in-law Sharon Mielke, sister Annie Hill, brothers Mike and Rev. Daniel (Evelyn), sister-in-law Betty, five grandchildren: Clint (Daleen), Crystal (John), Jason (Rebecca), Derek (Ashley), Rachel (Zlatan), ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Our mother was born May 1, 1922 in the Wood Mountain district, the 7th of 12 children. She was heart broken when she had to quit school at the age of 12 to help care for her youngest brother Danny, whom she remained close to her entire life. Mom's work ethic and capable skills began at a young age when she started working as kitchen help for neighbouring farmers. She married dad in October 1941 and they started their lives together in Killdeer, Sask. where they raised their 6 children. Mom excelled at her many talents and skills. An excellent seamstress she often designed and sewed our clothing, even without a pattern. She also enjoyed knitting, quilting, crocheting, crafting, baking and cooking. She even picked up a hammer if something needed repairing. We never saw mom sit down, but was always providing for her family without complaining. Mom loved to serve others. It seemed we often had someone staying in our home or dropping by for meals, especially when they were having work done in dad's blacksmith shop. Mom was never so happy as when she was surrounded by her family. She cheerfully made birthdays a special occasion with a cake, candles and her little black Brownie. Christmas at our home was the highlight of the year. There was a great variety of baking, a beautiful trimmed tree, Christmas cards, decorated rooms, lights - inside and out, popcorn balls, pies and home made ice cream. Mom created memories that her kids will never forget. We thought she was the best cook in the world with her cabbage rolls, perogies and borsch. Mom loved the out doors and took great pride in her gardens, beautiful flowers, bushes and trees. Of course there was berry picking, canning and freezing to follow. We believed there was no task mother couldn't or wouldn't do. She even painted the neighbours huge barn roof when no one else would. Mom ventured into the business world when she and dad bought the local grocery store which she, with amazing managerial skills, ran successfully for many years. Mom and dad moved to Regina in the 70's to be near their children. Mom soon became involved in a local church and was pleased to help in any way she could, often preparing and serving meals for those in need. As children, Mom taught us about Jesus and her love for Him guided her throughout her life. Mother moved into Pioneer Village in 2013 where her children visited her daily. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to all the staff (of 2W) for their wonderful care. We also like to extend a thank you to Mom's special friend, Merle Weeler, who brightened her days with caring visits. - Thank you Mom, for lovingly nurturing us, as we grew. Your attitudes, values, hopes and dreams became part of us. We love you! A Private Graveside Service was held Sunday, August 14, 2016 at the Killdeer Cemetery, Killdeer, SK. An online book of condolences may be signed at www.rossfuneralservice.com. Arrangement entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
