Mervin was born March 31, 1941 in Coronach, SK to Chester and Edna Moe. He was the family’s first born, with his sister, Vivian, being born six years later. In 1957 Mervin moved to the Saskatchewan Training School in Moose Jaw, SK where he lived and worked for many years. In 1971 Mervin re-located to Victoria House in Regina and began working at the Cosmo Activity Centre. Mervin enjoyed his work in the green house and attended camp in Lumsden, SK during the summers. Mervin worked part time as a church caretaker before transitioning to Sask Abilities in the early 1980’s. He maintained his employment there for 36 years where he was a dedicated worker in the maintenance and woodwork areas. He valued his independence and lived with support in approved private service homes before transitioning to his first apartment in 1998, where he resided for 13 years. In 2014, Mervin moved to Milton Heights. He lived independently with support from the Regina Residential Resource Centre’s (RRRC) Supportive Independent Living Program from 1998 until his eventual transition to long term care in the fall of 2021.
After retiring in 2007, Mervin filled his days with bike rides, coffee and pool with friends, and walks at the Cornwall Centre. He spent many years bowling and had a collection of trophies to show for it. Mervin could always make others laugh and will be remembered as a dedicated Riders fan who found joy in growing his hair long, taking pictures, and watching his favorite tv programs. Family was important to Mervin, and he frequently returned home to Rockglen, SK to spend holidays with his parents, and later flew to Edmonton and Victoria to spend time with his sister and brother-in-law. Mervin is survived by his brother-in-law, Bob Christie, and was pre-deceased by his sister Vivian, and parents Edna and Chester.
A special thank you to Eden Care, Home Care, and RRRC who’s support allowed Mervin to remain in his apartment until his 80th year. Mervin spent his final year being well cared for by the Extendicare community where he passed on Monday, September 19, 2022.
