With great sadness, we announce the passing of Michael Cobbe, on December 7, 2025, at age 73.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, Estelle and John. He is greatly missed by his wife of 52 years, Carmen (Krett); three children: Stacey (Jarrod) Tessier and their children Giselle and Acadia; Caley (Chad) Gareau and their children Maja, Lochlan and Leyton; Patrick (Chantel) and their children Evelyn and Joseph; his sister Shelley (Jim) Johnston and their children Liam and John.
Michael grew up on the family farm north of Limerick, where his mother taught at the local school and his father farmed. He completed high school at Luther College in Regina—an escape, as he liked to say, from having his mother as his teacher in his final years. Michael later attended the University of Saskatchewan for two years, where he met his future wife, Carmen. They met while living in the same apartment building and went on to share 52 years together. After deciding university wasn’t his style (he preferred wood, nails, and things that didn’t argue back), he transferred to SIAST and became a journeyman carpenter.
Michael and Carmen eventually settled in Limerick, where he worked as both a carpenter and a farmer. He was an avid reader who loved political discussions, history, and ancestry research. He had a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor, often catching people off guard with perfectly timed jokes and one-liners. His sons-in-law learned quickly that engaging in political or religious debates with him was a losing battle. Michael could often be found in the kitchen at the head of the table with his family for hours of storytelling and contagious Cobbe laughter.
Michael also had a lifelong love of music, especially The Tragically Hip, The Guess Who, and The Rolling Stones. He also enjoyed the many skiing trips he took with friends and family, creating lasting memories on the slopes together.
Community service was a defining part of Michael’s life. During his time at Luther College, he joined the Army Reserve with the Regina Rifles. After returning to Limerick, he served on many local boards and organizations, including the Limerick School Board, Limerick Co-op Board, Limerick Pool Board, the 49ers Club, the Solo Club, and the Limerick Housing Authority. Thanks to his example, his children now volunteer on various boards too—so clearly, his sense of obligation (and stubbornness) runs in the family.
Michael took great pride in his carpentry. He built numerous homes, shops, and commercial buildings throughout the region. He designed the Limerick Rink and was closely involved in its construction. One of his proudest accomplishments was the addition and renovation he completed on the 1917 family home in 1981. Later, one of his final major projects was designing and helping build the family cabin in Elkford, BC. The project spanned three years of weekends and holidays with the whole family working together.
Michael leaves behind a legacy of craftsmanship, service, curiosity, humor, music, and devotion to family. His contributions to his community, his love of learning, and the laughter, stories, and experiences he shared will be treasured for many years to come.
A Celebration of Michael’s life will be held in the spring of 2026 in Limerick, SK. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Michael can be sent to The Limerick Opportunity Centre and the Limerick Rink; E Transfers can be made to [email protected] or mail to Village of Limerick, Box 129, Limerick, SK S0H 2P0 or in person at the RM Office in Limerick (please specify Michael Cobbe's Memorial).
