Sylvia Myrle Gent of Melfort, Sk. and formerly Coronach, SK passed away peacefully with family by her side on Dec. 7, 2022. Sylvia celebrated her 94th birthday just four days before, on Dec. 3, with some of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren able to bring a small party to her hospital room. She cherished her time with her family and always looked forward to visits with them. Sylvia was able to live quite independently in a small apartment, attached to the home of her only daughter and son-in-law, till the day she entered the hospital on Nov. 19, 2022, after suffering a fall. She loved completing jigsaw puzzles, competing at scrabble, playing cards, and making fortrel mats, sliders, and picnic bench covers that are in many homes across Canada today. She made quilts for her children and grandchildren with fortrel squares that she scavenged for in second hand stores or was lucky enough to receive bags from people who heard about her craft in exchange for a mat or two. She loved to garden and her many hours paid off when she was able to harvest enough to fill her cold room with canned goods for the winter and have enough to share with family and friends. She also loved to sew and crochet and made many tablecloths, blankets, and other items as requested, over the years. She had a smile that lit up the room and a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a hand
Sylvia is survived by her six children, Gordon (Tori) of Balgonie, SK, Jim of Forest Grove, BC, Dale (Iris) of Forest Grove, BC, Joanne (Emery) of Melfort, SK, Neil (Amanda) of Coronach, SK and Kelly (Angela) of Coronach, SK, a total of 21 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sylvia was predeceased by her husband, Robert on Jan. 1, 2007, parents, Ernest and Loretta Colvin, infant granddaughter, Kayla, and brothers, Lowell Colvin and Doug Colvin.
A celebration of life took place on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 1:00pm at the Gent family farm in Coronach, where Sylvia and Robert resided and is now home to Neil and Amanda. Granddaughter, Richelle Gent, will be leading the service. Lunch and fellowship followed then all were invited to the interment at the Berg Cemetery.
Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Canadian Cancer Society in memory of Sylvia.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Fedusiak Funeral Chapel of Melfort, Sask. and Ross Funeral Home of Assiniboia, Sask.
