Roy grew up in Tustin, CA. He was raised by Charles and Marian Hill on an orange grove when farming was an everyday way of life in Orange County. Roy talked about spending nights in the grove when temperatures dropped. A bell would ring and he, along with the neighborhood boys, would jump into action lighting smudge pots to protect the trees from freezing. He was a proud member of 4H raising dairy goats and cattle. His family were active members of the First Christian Church of Santa Ana.
Roy graduated from Tustin High School in 1957 and went on to study architectural engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He played saxophone in the Cal Poly Collegians Dance Band.
After Cal Poly, Roy was enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served his country in the Pacific. He was fortunate to serve in peaceful times, he and his navy buddies joked how they fought the “battle" of San Diego Bay. After the Navy he returned home to work for a local civil engineer who introduced him to the Elks club and he remained an active member for 62 years. During this time he met his future wife, Sharon. They were married in August 1966 and created an idyllic life together. They enjoyed raising their two sons, house boating, water skiing, RV'ing, spending time with friends and family.
Roy’s parents owned an apartment complex that he and Sharon managed in the early years of their marriage. At that time, a friend suggested he go into property management full time. Hill Realty opened in the early 1970’s and remained open for over 35 years specializing in property management and real estate development.
In 1982 Roy and Sharon decided to call the central coast of California home. They settled in Atascadero where they raised their two sons, participated in 4H, the Elks club, and continued their love of house boating, water skiing, and RV'ing in their motorhome. They were famous for their annual Christmas parties.
Roy was a proud Cal Poly SLO alumnus, a proud Cal Poly dad, and most recently, a proud Cal Poly grandpa. He wore the green and gold with great pride and was usually adorned in some sort of Cal Poly swag.
Roy was a devoted husband and father. He loved his family and he loved the Lord. He was preceded in death by his best friend and loving wife of 41 years, Sharon, in 2007. Roy lived independently up until the last year of his life. He enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends. He spoke plainly, loved to joke, and have breakfast at Joe’s Place. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
His family would like to thank the wonderful community of Creston Village who created a new home and sense of community for Roy during his last year. He made new friends and enjoyed his time there.
Roy is survived by his two sons, Chuck (Logan) and David (Betsy), and his four grandchildren: Emily, Annie, Thomas, Charlotte, and sister Ann.
