Esther Rose Layugan (85) was born in San Luis Obispo, California, to Eleanor and Joseph Dominguez. She passed away peacefully on Sunday September 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with Huntington’s disease.
One of nine children, she grew up alongside her siblings, laying the foundation for the deep love of family that would remain at the heart of her life.
Esther attended elementary school in Morro Bay from kindergarten through eighth grade before attending San Luis Obispo High School, where she graduated in 1959.
Esther married the love of her life, Ron Layugan Sr. on April 2, 1961. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised four children.
She worked for the County Health Department, the Shell Shop, the local dry cleaner and the family-owned gas station all part of the Morro Bay community that she called home since childhood.
A devout Catholic, she attended St. Timothy’s Catholic Church for many years. Her faith remained a source of strength and comfort throughout her life.
Esther will be remembered for her love of family, her wonderful cooking, and the joy she found in being a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her home was always open, and she had a special way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether family or friends came for a meal or needed a place to stay, there was always room in Esther’s home and at her table.
She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports, walks along the Embarcadero, and going on vacations.
Esther leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, strength, and love. Her memory will live on in the generations she leaves behind, around family tables, and in the countless memories shared by those who knew and loved her.
Esther is survived by her four children, June (Terry) Senclair; Ronald (Kathy) Layugan; Jim (Alisha) Layugan and Vivian (Chris) Paris. She is also survived by her nine beloved grandchildren, Terry-Lee, Everett, Vincent, Danielle, Rachelle, Sarah, Dusty, Lindsay, and Chelsay; 16 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Manuel, Mike, and Lilly.
