James Monroe Billings passed away peacefully early in the morning with his devoted wife and family present on December 19, 2016, in Paso Robles, CA. James was born in Lima, Ohio, to Otis Edward and Gladys Billings, on November 20, 1930. At the early age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Navy during the Korean conflict, and rapidly progressed to the rank of Chief Boatswain’s Mate. He was retired after more than 20 years of proud and honorable service to U.S. Navy and the United States of America. During his 20 plus years of duty, Jim saw action in Korea and Viet Nam. According to him, the highlight of his career was the two hours of combat duty he spent in Viet Nam commanding a high speed Navy River Combat Patrol “Swift Boat,” assisting Navy, Marine Corps and Army Combat Units on the many rivers in Viet Nam. The Navy recognized Jim’s service with numerous awards and medals, including his favorite; the Viet Nam Service Combat Medal, with multiple campaign stars. Jim established JMB Appraisals in the mid seventies. As an accomplished self-employed insurance adjuster, he worked in the Los Angeles area, and then relocated his family and business in 1981 to the Central Coast, where his success continued until he retired in 2006. Most treasured in his life was his beloved wife, Gale. He was an avid reader and enjoyed his animals. He was an admired man, loving and giving, a friend to many, well liked and respected. Jim lived an adventurous, full and beautiful 86 years of life. He will be dearly missed and always remembered. Jim is survived by his wife, Gale Billings of 36 years. Together they enjoyed a beautiful, caring marriage, blessed with an everlasting love. Truly they are soul mates.
