Ken Meyer, 70, of Atascadero passed away on January 13 at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center. He died as a result of an aggressive form of lung cancer. At this time, the family would like to publicly thank the nurses and staff of the SVRMC ICU for the outstanding care and compassion they gave Ken during his brief two-week stay in their facility. Ken was born in Southern California to Walter and Betty Meyer. He is survived by his wife, Pam, and his son, Steve. His three other children—Ken Meyer, Jr. and his twin daughters, Shelby and Tiffany—sadly predeceased their father. Ken is also survived by his daughters-in-law Cassandra and Kelly; his grandchildren Hannah (Jose), Maddy, Corey, and Branden; his brothers David (Glenda) and Doug; his sisters Celia Ayres (John) and Cindy Duke (David); and numerous nieces and nephews. Ken began his employment with Pac Bell at the age of 20 and continued until his retirement 34 years later. After marrying his bride, Pam, in 1971, he expressed a desire to leave SoCal and move to a small town where he could “make a difference” in the community. In late 1972, he and Pam bought a home in Atascadero. Soon after that he joined the Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and remained in that capacity until he retired 15 years later. Ken was a member of the city’s first Parks and Recreation Board. During his tenure, he was instrumental in getting the “kiddy park” at the Lake rebuilt and in getting the Paloma Creek sports facility developed. Ken joined the Atascadero Jaycees and ultimately became its president. In 1996 he joined the Atascadero Elks Lodge and ascended to Exalted Ruler in 2000-01. He continued actively supporting the Elks in their numerous community service projects until his death. After retirement from the telephone company, Ken and Pam did what they loved to do—see our great country via their RV. In fact, just prior to his death, they had enjoyed a three-month trip to the South. Ken was loved and will be remembered for his friendly nature, quick wit, ready smile, and always-ready laughter. His friends and family agree that he was “one of a kind.” A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held in his honor at the Atascadero Elks’ Lodge, 1516 El Camino Real, on Saturday, January 31 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family recommends a donation to the Atascadero Elks’ “Purple Pig.” This is a program dedicated to helping children with special needs.
