

He was the youngest of four children and was preceded in death by his sister Mary Silveira, brothers Frank and George Silveira as well as his parents.
Luis was born at the Bonetti Ranch on Toury Road in Los Osos and has lived in San Luis Obispo County his entire life with the exception of his military service in the US Army during WWII. He served in Germany, France, Italy and Austria. At the tender age of only 19 years he managed a large NCO club in Italy.
Upon return from service to his country Luis helped his family run the local grocery store located at Mill and Morro in San Luis Obispo. After that, Luis did carpentry work, sold tires for Madelina Tires, was a beer distributer, and held various other jobs.
In 1951 he married Mary Alexander and they had two children, Larry and Debbie.
Luis worked many years for Alex Madonna Construction and the Operating Engineers, often pointing out roads and dams he helped build. After leaving the Operating Engineers he worked 20 years for the San Luis School District grounds dept. When he retired at 55 he continued to pursue his real love, buying, restoring and selling antiques. He and Mary spent great times traveling the country collecting treasures together. Mary passed away in 1999 after 46 years of marriage.
Anyone who knew Luis knew about his love of youth sports. He coached many baseball teams including a championship Little League team that took the title in 1962. In 1968, he took the Babe Ruth team all the way to the city championships. The Babe Ruth field at Pacheco School is named after him. Luis was the king of fundraisers. His motto was always “It’s for the Kids”. No one could refuse him. His heart and soul were always directed at bettering the lives of young athletes.
Luis began his professional baseball scouting career in 1972 with the Cincinnati Reds. From there he went on to work for Philadelphia then the Baltimore Oriels for 14 more years and ended his scouting career with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Luis supported local baseball teams throughout the county.
Cuesta College retired a jersey in his honor in 2007, and he was so touched by that. He was the pitching coach for North County Christian High School well into his 80’s.
Luis loved to BBQ, and he got great joy in the fellowship he enjoyed cooking with Dave, Dick, Gary, Joe and others. He cooked with the Atascadero Elks 2733 on Tuesday evenings in the park. He was also active in The American Legion Post 66 and Native Sons of the Golden West in San Luis Obispo.
In 2002 Luis found love again and married his second wife Sandy in 2006. They recently celebrated their 10th Anniversary. Realizing how fortunate they were to get another chance at happiness, they never missed an opportunity to celebrate each other. His years with Sandy were filled with love, fun, travel and great joy.
Luis is survived by his adoring wife Sandy, his son Larry (Debbie) Silveira, daughter Debbie (Mike) Wegemer, five grandsons, Jared (Jaime) and Brandon (Summer) Silveira, Mark (Marianne) and Jordan Wegemer and Noah Winslow, great-granddaughters Emma and Olivia Silveira, great-grandson River Silveira, nieces Jackie (Bill) Estes, Carol (Terry) Ammen, nephew Irv (Carole) Silveira and step daughter Amy (Jeff) Winslow and special granddaughter Janelle Westbrook as well as his best friends Dave Rodgers, Dick Mueller, Wayne Williams, Maria Mueller and Joe Montoya and the many other lives he touched. He will be truly missed.
It was Luis’ wish to have a final gathering of his friends and family to celebrate his life and enjoy some good BBQ and fellowship.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Atascadero Bible Church 6225 Atascadero Mall, Atascadero, on Saturday Sept 17th at 11 AM, followed by a reception at the Atascadero Lake Pavilion 9315 Pismo Ave. Atascadero.
