Anna Erna Underwood

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Anna Erna Underwood, 95, of Athens, Alabama. Surrounded by her loving family, Anna peacefully left her earthly home on July 23, 2026, for her heavenly home.

Anna was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was defined by her unwavering love for her family. She shared a beautiful marriage with her beloved husband, John, who preceded her in death. Together, they built a life rooted in dedication to one another, laughter, and treasured memories along the banks of the Indian River. Their three remarkable sons, Gary, Mike, and Larry, each loved and cared for their mother deeply.

The loss of her sons, Gary and Mike, was a sorrow Anna carried deeply. She loved them fiercely and remained proud of them throughout her life, finding comfort in the family and legacy they helped create.

In the final chapter of her life, her youngest son Larry remained faithfully by her side, ensuring she never faced life's challenges alone. His unwavering love, support, and devotion were a great reflection of the values Anna had instilled in her family.

Anna and John’s home along the Indian River was more than a house—it was a haven of love, laughter, and togetherness. It became the heart of countless family gatherings, where holidays were celebrated, summers were eagerly anticipated, and generations came together to create memories that would last a lifetime. Whether casting a fishing line from the dock, listening to stories around the table, or simply enjoying one another's company, those moments were woven into the fabric of their family's history. The warmth of Anna's home and the love she shared there will remain one of her family's most treasured gifts, forever remembered in the stories they tell, the traditions they continue, and the countless memories they hold dear.

Anna had a special gift for making those around her feel deeply loved, and nowhere was that more evident than in the relationship she shared with her cherished granddaughters, Melissa, Shelby, and Jennifer. She delighted in sharing her talents and wisdom with them, teaching them how to sew, cook, and find joy in life's simple blessings.

Countless hours were spent together in her kitchen and around her home, where recipes were lovingly prepared, stories were shared, and laughter filled the room. To her granddaughters, she was more than a grandmother—she was a teacher, a confidante, a source of unwavering encouragement, and a shining example of how to live a life filled with grace and purpose.

Anna passed along far more than practical skills to her granddaughters. She planted seeds of curiosity, creativity, compassion, and strength that would grow throughout their lives. As the years passed, each granddaughter reflected a different part of her—one with a love of learning and writing, one with a gift for nurturing others through home, family, and baking, and one with a gentle heart and a natural calling to comfort, care for, and serve others. Together, they became a living testament to her legacy, carrying forward the values and love she so faithfully shared with them. Through each of them, a part of Anna lives on.

Her grandson, Casey, held a special place in her heart, and Anna cherished every visit, conversation, and moment they shared together. Casey's visits were among the highlights of her days, and she found great joy in watching him grow from a young boy into a man of character, determination, and integrity. She was incredibly proud of his accomplishments and celebrated each milestone with genuine excitement. Casey's love for baseball, first as a player and later as a coach, brought Anna endless pride. She never wanted to miss an opportunity to watch him on the field or follow his journey from afar. In so many ways, he reminded her of his father, and seeing those familiar qualities reflected in Casey brought her both comfort and happiness. Watching the life he built, the goals he achieved, and the person he became was one of the greatest joys of her later years.

Her love will continue to live through her sister, Lillian McCourt; her son, Larry Underwood (Pam); daughters-in-law, Gail Underwood and Patti Underwood; grandchildren, Melissa Taylor (Aaron), Shelby Taylor (Zach), Casey Underwood (Jessika), Jennifer Caruso (Dave), and Kellee Johnson (Michael); and great-grandchildren, Logan, Eliza, John, Aria, Xander, Noah, Evan, Mia, Ben, Chloe, and Terryn.

Though her family mourns the loss of their cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, they find comfort in the promise of eternal life and knowing that Anna has been reunited with her beloved husband, John Underwood; her sons, Gary Underwood and Mike Underwood; her sisters, Georgetta Westfall and Dolores Langdon; her brothers, Henry Liepe and George Liepe; and her parents, George and Erna Liepe.

A memorial service will be held at Tanner Church of Christ on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 4:00 PM with visitation preceding from 3:00 to 4:00 PM.
