Douglas Eugene Andrews

The funeral for Douglas Eugene Andrews, 78, a lifelong resident of Athens and Limestone County, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at McConnell Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Gooch officiating. Interment will be in Athens City Cemetery.

Visitation for family and friends will be immediately prior to the service from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home.

Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Clay Andrews and Una Wallace Andrews.

Doug passed away Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2011, at Athens-Limestone Hospital, of complications of pneumonia.

Doug attended Athens High School, playing football under the revered Furman Elmore. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, his overseas duty being at the now-closed Wheelus Air Force Base, in Tripoli, Libya, North Africa. Afterward he had a career with the U.S. Army and NASA, having the privilege of working on the Wernher von Braun team on Redstone Arsenal during the preparation of the Apollo XI lunar landing in 1969. During his retirement years, Doug enjoyed traveling, fishing, collecting antiques, and doting on his grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his wife of 52 years, Frances Morrison Andrews of Athens; one son, Steven Douglas Andrews and wife Robye Dunnivant Andrews of Harvest; two grandchildren, John Bruce Andrews, currently serving with the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan, and Margaret Frances Andrews of Madison, currently a student at Auburn University; two step-grandchildren, Kris Davis of Ardmore and Bree McConnell of Athens; three sisters, Gloria Andrews Wheeler and husband Basil, Joan Andrews Pressnell, and Phyllis Andrews Kindred, all of Athens.

Pallbearers will be Tony Spence, Kris Davis, Ricky McConnell, Jason Braly, Tim Andrews, Michael Gordon and Steve Tesney

Following internment, the family will receive friends at 26684 Denbo Circle, Harvest in the East Limestone community.
