Mr. Thornton was born March 18, 1935 in Limestone County. His parents were Vadis and Ruth Thornton. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. Mr. Thornton was a member of Northside Church of Christ of Athens. He retired from General Motors in 1990. He enjoyed his retirement by investing in real estate, spending time with family and playing checkers with friends.
Mr. Thornton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Martha Thomas Thornton, his daughters, Janice Thornton-Manning, Renita Kelley (husband Steve Kelley) and Amy Thornton and three granddaughters, Alexandria Wallace (husband Radney Wallace), Miranda Goodman (husband Clayton Goodman) and Stephanie Manning. He was preceded in death by his parents Vadis and Ruth Thornton and his sister Marjorie Birdwell and is survived by his sisters Corene Thornton, Josephine Solomon (husband Frank Solomon), Barbara Birdsong (husband Benny Birdsong) and Marie Patterson.
Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 10:00-11:15 at McConnell funeral home, followed by a graveside service at 11:30 at Limestone Memorial Gardens with Bud White officiating. Pallbearers are Radney Wallace, Clayton Goodman, Ricky Patterson, Brian Birdwell, Greg Solomon, and Benny Birdsong. Honorary Pallbearers are Frank Solomon, Billy Abernathy, and Clifton Poole.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Erskin Curtis Thornton to Hospice of Limestone County.
