George Lancaster Braly, Jr was born to George L Braly, Sr and Katharyn Worsham Braly on the 25th of Feb 1929 on the farm at Tanner. He left this earth surrounded by his family on the 28th of May 2024 at age 95. He grew up in Tanner and graduated from Tanner High School. He was a Life-long member of Tanner United Methodist Church. After graduation he went on a blind date with a lady from Decatur (Jeannie Davis). Little did he know that this lady would be the love of his life and the woman he would share the rest of his full and wonderful life with. Two daughters blessed this marriage.
George was a lifetime farmer having grown up on a dairy farm. As an adult he raised beef cattle and row crops. He was a rare breed of farmer in that he was successful. He did this by working with his neighbor and friend Gilbert Gamble.
When George worked, he worked. When he played, he played. A tennis court next to his home was the site of many a Sunday afternoon tennis tournament when he was a young man. When the girls came along George and Jeannie began camping in the Arrowhead Camping Club. They camped in lots of places and the girls remember being in Ocala, FL, the Smoky Mountains, and Joe Wheeler State Park to name a few. He also enjoyed being on the water. He owned or shared ownership of several camps on Elk River and Sugar Creek. George loved to play dominos and dirty board. He could spend hours at a time playing against one of the girls, a friend, or one of the grandkids. George was just a fun guy to be around and a friend to all. He always met you with a grin on his face and he was genuinely glad to see you.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife (Jean Davis), two granddaughters (Beth and Carla Carter), and one grandson (Ben Williamson). He is survived by his daughters Celia Marie (Buster) Williamson and Melanie Carol (Steve) Carter. He was Papa to grandchildren: Amy Carter, Brian Williamson(Ginger), Josh Carter(Christa), Andy Williamson(Jennifer), Hoyt Williamson(Corinne), and Katie Carter(Scottie). George also adored his great grandchildren: Braly, Reid, Melody, Molly Drew, Foster, Carter, Briella, Graham, Beckett, and Olivia.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 8th from 11:30 to 1:00 at McConnell Funeral Home. A celebration of George’s life will follow at 1:00. Interment will follow at Athens City Cemetery.
