Mae Tillman Poole, born on October 19, 1960, at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama, passed away peacefully on June 13, 2026, surrounded by loved ones visiting from near and far. She was the cherished daughter of Mary Jo and Hal Coffman and granddaughter of Mabel and TP Smith, all of whom predeceased her.
Mae's life was a testament to compassion, dedication, love, and it also included major struggles. She was a devoted mother to her sons, Clinton David Mason (Paige) and John Mathew Mason (Laura), and a loving sister to David Poole (Doug Moore). She is also survived by Tim Mason with whom she shared the joy of raising her beloved sons. Her legacy continues through her four adoring grandchildren and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever hold her memory dear.
Mae's journey began with her graduation from Athens High School in 1979. With a passion for healthcare inspired by her mother, she pursued nursing, earning her Registered Nurse License and Associate Degree in Nursing from Calhoun Community College in the early 1980s. Her career spanned various roles in healthcare, from an OR nurse to director of infection control. She served at Athens Limestone Hospital alongside her mother, although many were unaware of their familial connection. Mae's commitment to healthcare was matched by her dedication to education, demonstrated by her service on the Athens City Board of Education in the early 2000s.
Her love for the arts was evident as she engaged in theater and dance, contributing as a choreographer for local school productions. Mae's vibrant spirit, love for history, and strong belief in social and health equity were the hallmarks of her character. Music from the 1970s and 1980s, particularly soul, was the soundtrack of her life, resonating with her heart's rhythm.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to those who supported Mae through her struggles and to those she, in turn, helped through her work. Her passions were diverse, from college football, cheering for Auburn and the University of Tennessee, to her culinary creativity, which she shared generously.
Mae Tillman Poole’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, service, and joy. She will be profoundly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
