Marvilene was born April 6, 1934, in Limestone County to Walter Marvin Croley and Hattie Vernella Boyd Croley. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jimmy Hargrove; and one son, Billy Hargrove.
Marvilene was known and loved by many. To many that loved her dearly, she was affectionately called “Mawmaw”, and to others she may have simply been called “Girl”. She loved and spoiled her family very much, especially her grandchildren. You would often find her sharing stories about the grandchildren and their many accomplishments. It was very obvious how very proud of them that she was. She was a talented lady and doing things for others gave her great joy. She could take things that others may discard as useless or “scraps” and handcraft beautiful priceless treasures. Her attention to detail could be seen in the many quilts that she made and stitched so meticulously with love for so many. Proverbs 31:24 says, “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” This was Mawmaw. You would never find her “idle”. No work was ever too dirty, hard, or trivial to her. If something needed to be done, she just did it without complaining. She was always taking care of her family, friends, and neighbors. Whether making fried pies, butter rolls, or handmade quilts for the local antique tractor show as part of their community fundraiser, or making delicious pear honey to share with her neighbors, she was always busy at the work of serving others. If you were ever on the phone talking with her you know you would always get asked “Y’all need anything?”. And if you did, she would be ready and willing to do whatever you needed. She was truly a selfless person. Everyone was always welcomed at Mawmaw’s house. Jerry Smith, a lifelong neighbor, was always referred to by Mawmaw as “her own son”. Jerry will tell you that he ate as many meals at “Moma’s” house as he did at his own. This speaks of her love for people. She was not only a good neighbor, but she was neighborly, just like her own neighbors the Wales’ and Gilberts. Mawmaw didn’t have a need for the fancy things in life, but enjoyed the simple pleasures around her that God had blessed her with. No matter if you called her Marvilene, Mawmaw, or Girl, after being with her for only a few moments, there was one thing for certain…you knew that you had been truly blessed to have had the privilege of sharing just a tiny part of her love for life and her genuine love of serving others. She was truly a blessing to her family, friends, neighbors, and many others. She will be missed greatly.
