Mary Orr, extraordinary, gracious, beautiful person, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and lover of animals, especially dogs, went home to the Lord on Sunday, April 10, 2022. She passed gently, quietly, peacefully with her men around her. She gave her life up to Jesus Christ when she was 12 at Vacation Bible School.
She was born to James E. and Eva Wellden on December 18, 1938, who proceeded her in death. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Marie Smith (Harold), Doris Lamon (James) and Shirley Mullins (Otto).
She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 64 years, Johnny Orr, son, Lynch Orr and grandson and wife, Sean and Kate Orr and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary was beautiful and had a gracious demeanor. One friend said she reminded her of Grace Kelley. Although these things do not create headlines, she fulfilled her roles as wife, mother and grandmother with great distinction.
Mary held many different positions during her life according to what the family needed, always earning excellent praise from her employers, who expressed sorrow when she moved on.
The family will hold visitation at 1 PM on Friday, April 15th at McConnell Funeral Home in Athens, AL followed by a graveside service at 2 PM in Roselawn Cemetery with Jim McNamee officiating.
Pallbearers will be Ben Anderson, Crutcher Smith, Mitch Parker, Evan Wellden, Sean Orr, and Harry Golden.
A celebration of life gathering is planned later at Christ Presbyterian Church, 2323 Old Hickory Blvd. Nashville, TN 37215.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Christ Presbyterian Church, Nashville, or to Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN.
